Year 2 English

From 18th January all work shall now be uploaded onto the Classdojo page.  Any problems please get in touch!

Phonics - As you will see on your timetable on the homepage, we recommend that you start each day with phonics. This should be for around 20 minutes.

Why not practise sentence substitution? You need to to read the sentence in its original form then choose a word from the selection to make a new sentence.  You could just practise reading your new sentence or you could write them out.

Click here for Phase 3 sentence substitution activities.

Or there are some workbooks you could print out if you wish!

In English this half term we shall be using the story ‘The day the crayons quit’ by Oliver Jeffers.

This week we shall be focusing on different types of sentences: statement, command, question and exclamation. We shall focus on a different type each day.

Monday

Today we shall be looking at questions. Click on the link and work through the activities and games.

You have three minutes to write down as many question words as you can. How many could you think of?  For example, Who? What? Why?

Find something to read- it could be your school book, a book of your own, the cereal box, a board game’s instructions, the shampoo bottle – anything!  Find three different questions and copy them down in your best handwriting!

Tasks today:

Look at the front cover of our new class book and think of five questions.  Show somebody else the picture – do they have the same questions?

Blue Group: Write them down – remember to use a capital letter at the start of the sentence and a question mark at the end.

Green Group: Make sure each question starts with a different question word.

Purple Group: Use an adjective in every sentence.

If you want to practise more here is an online game you could use.

Tuesday

Exclamations

Practise using exclamations with these activities!

Watch a narration of this week's book

Today we have learnt that we can use exclamation marks to show that someone is shouting. Look at the front cover of our book this week.  What do you think each crayon is saying? Practise saying it using different voices for each character -If you look carefully at the character’s faces it may give you a clue as to what tone to use.

Today's tasks

Blue Group and Green group: Draw the scene on the front cover of the book.  In the speech bubbles write down what you think each character is saying – remember to use a capital letter at the beginning of your sentence and an exclamation mark at the end.

Purple Group: Write a paragraph describing the scene from the front cover.  Use reported speech to identify what each of the characters are saying. For example: “ I need a rest!” Demanded red crayon.

Wednesday

Statements

Watch a narration of this week's story.

Today's tasks

Purple Group: Write 5 statements about the crayons making sure you extend your sentences using words such as 'and' or 'because'.

Blue Group: Write 5 statements about the crayons remembering to use capital letters at the beginning of the sentence and a fullstop at the end.

Thursday

Today's tasks

Blue Group: Choose 5 crayons and write a command for each.

Green Group: Choose 5 crayons and write a command for each making sure that every command is different.

Purple Group: Choose 5 crayons and write a command for each that reflects their complaint.  This will show me that you have read the story carefully!

Friday

Today you are going to revise the four different types of sentences - completing the activities as you work through the powerpoint.  When you have finished the powerpoint, write an example of a statement, command, exclamation and question for just one of the crayons from this week's story and submit it to me.
