English at Hob Green

English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; pupils, therefore, who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised.

At Hob Green, the teaching of English is based around the formation of strong and tangible links between reading, writing and speaking/listening activities.  Four macro-concepts (culture, communication, story and meaning) provide a framework within which a wide range of knowledge, understanding and skills are taught and learnt.

Click on the link below for more information about these macro-concepts.

For pupils

During the period of school closure, your teachers will set you weekly English work to complete. Please see your year group page to find that work. You can also find lots of useful information to help you with your reading on the phonics and reading page. When working on writing tasks set by your teacher, remember to think carefully about who the audience is for your writing (who will read it) and what the purpose is. We communicate differently in English depending on these two things.

To help you to practise the grammar 'skills' you have been taught so far this year, take a look the Champions' Checklist sheet for your year group below:
